August fits on the inside of a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt, so the outside hardware and existing keys can stay. That makes it an interesting option when the appearance of your door matters.

Consider before buying
- Budget for a compatible keypad if you want guest-code entry or Airbnb integration.
- Uses CR123 batteries; keep the correct replacements ready.

Local fit. For an exposed entrance, Aqara specifies IP65 for the exterior keypad. The inside panel belongs indoors; assess the whole doorway, not just the front keypad.

A condo door in Vancouver, Burnaby or Richmond
Start with your strata’s door-hardware requirements: exterior appearance, shared keys and any fire-rated door assembly. A retrofit lock such as August may preserve the outside look, but it still needs to suit the door and your building’s requirements. Ask your manager before choosing hardware. A suite lock also leaves the lobby and parkade access system separate.

A side entrance, basement suite or laneway home
Check the Wi-Fi signal at the actual entrance with the door closed. A router in the main house may not give the separate entrance the connection you want. Choose between built-in Wi-Fi and a nearby bridge or hub, then plan who should receive permanent household codes and who needs temporary access.
An exposed Lower Mainland entrance
Compare the manufacturer’s exterior weather rating and temperature range with the conditions at your door. For example, Aqara rates the U100’s outer keypad IP65 and lists an operating range of −35°C to 66°C. Its indoor panel is intended to stay indoors, so this is a home-entry option, not a recommendation for a fully exposed garden gate.
An older door that needs a push to lock
Before adding a motor, make sure the deadbolt moves smoothly into the frame. If you have to lift the handle or lean on the door, include that in the installation visit.
