When replacement makes sense

Damaged hardware, unavailable repair parts or a change in how you use the door can make replacement appropriate. If the only concern is who has a key, rekeying a suitable existing lock may be enough.

Explain what you want to improve: reliable locking, a different handle, an additional deadbolt or keyless entry. That gives the quote a clear purpose.

Check the fit before buying.

Locks are not one-size-fits-all. Door thickness, existing holes, the frame and the current hardware affect compatibility. A like-for-like replacement can be a different job from preparing a door for a new lock.

For an older or protected property, check applicable requirements before authorising changes to original doors or visible hardware. For strata properties, have the building’s requirements available.

Finish with working access.

Discuss how many keys you need and whether the new lock should match another compatible lock. If you are considering a keypad or smart lock, include its model and the access features you expect to use.
