Rekey or replace your locks?

What does rekeying change?
Rekeying changes a suitable lock’s internal key combination so it works with a new key. The previous key no longer operates that rekeyed cylinder. The handle, deadbolt and exterior finish can often stay in place.
It is a useful option when keys have gone missing, someone no longer needs access, or you have moved into a home with an unknown number of key copies. It changes access through that cylinder; it does not repair worn hardware or change a separate keypad code or building fob.
When is replacement the better choice?
Lock replacement makes sense when the existing hardware is damaged, suitable parts are unavailable, or you want a different lock. Adding a deadbolt to a door is also installation work rather than rekeying.
For keyless entry, compare smart locks and their features before buying. A new finish, keypad or app does not automatically resolve a door that sticks; the hardware and door need to work together.
A difficult lock may need repair first.
If the key turns with the door open but the bolt catches when it is closed, tell us that. The door or frame alignment may be involved. If the key is hard to turn either way, the key or cylinder may need attention. These observations help us assess the problem; they are not a diagnosis on their own.
Lock repair addresses a fault. Rekeying changes who can use a key. Sometimes a job needs both. Avoid forcing a reluctant key or bolt.
Moving into a Vancouver or Lower Mainland home
Make a short list of the doors you use: front entrance, side or back door, and the door between the garage and house. Note which keys open each one. Ask whether compatible locks can be keyed alike so fewer keys are needed.
For a condo, check the building’s requirements before changing suite-door hardware. The lobby, parkade and shared fobs are separate from your own door lock. For a rental, arrange approval with the person responsible for the property before booking changes.
Which option costs less?
A quote depends on the number of locks, their condition, the hardware involved and how many new keys you need. Rekeying keeps suitable existing hardware, while replacement includes the selected new lock and its installation. Compare the complete scope rather than the cost of a lock on a shelf.

A few useful answers
Will my old keys still work after rekeying?
They will no longer open the cylinder that was rekeyed. Include every relevant lock in the job: a lock left unchanged still uses its existing key.
Can all my doors use one key?
Compatible locks can sometimes be keyed alike. The lock types and key systems need to match; we can check what is possible for your doors.
What if I am locked out and my keys are lost?
We can help you get inside and discuss rekeying or replacement so the missing keys no longer give access through the locks being changed. Mention both the lockout and the lost keys when you call.
Does a smart lock replace the need to rekey?
Not always. Some smart locks retain the existing keyed cylinder. If a physical key is missing, discuss that cylinder as well as the digital access codes and app users.
